Game - Quarry Species

Game or quarry animals are a collective name for species that can be hunted and basically covers quite a number of birds and mammals. On my site under the game headline I summarise deer and bovidae such as European Bison, Alpine Chomois, Alpine Ibex, Spanish Ibex, Pyrenean Chamois and Mouflon.

Cervidae - Deer

Deer are cloft-hooved animals. All male grow antlers especially for the reproductive season and cast them after that period. The exeption are reindeer where both male and female grow antlers. The wild living species in Europe are:

  • Red Deer (Cervus elaphus)
  • Fallow Deer (Cervus dama)
  • Sika Deer (Cervus nippon)
  • Chital (Axis axis) - the Balkans
  • European Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus)
  • Elk (Alces alces)
  • Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) - Iceland, Svalbard, Norway, Finland, northern Russia
  • Reeve's Muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi)

The bovidae summarises a large number of cloft-hooven animals of which males always grow and bear horns. In some species females also posses horns. The game-related species are:

  • European Bison (Bison bonasus)
  • Muskox (Ovibos moschatus)
  • Alpine Chamoise (Rupicapra rupicapra)
  • Pyrenean Chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica)
  • Alpine Ibex (Capra ibex)
  • Mouflon (Ovis gmelinii)
